In the US, months may start a day earlier or later than Umm al-Qura depending on moon sighting, the Fiqh Council of North America or your mosque.
The Hijri calendar is lunar: months have 29 or 30 days, so the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, and Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. This tool uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the most widely used for calculations.

US mosques follow one of three approaches: the astronomical calculation adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America, which announces dates in advance; local moon sighting in North America; or following Saudi Arabia's announcement. So Ramadan or Eid can start on different days in the same city. This tool shows the Umm al-Qura date, which is usually very close to the astronomical calculation, but follow your mosque's announcement for fasting and Eid.
Umm al-Qura is a set of pre-computed tables, and modern dates convert exactly. Very old dates, from before Saudi Arabia adopted it officially around 1937, may differ by a day from an old document, because months then began by moon sighting. If your passport birth date differs from the tool by a day, the passport date is the official one.
